I had to laugh when Erum suggested we include a recipe in our blog post. Fortunately she means a paper recipe because cooking is not my favorite thing to do. However, I have cooked up some paper recipes for holiday tags. Tags are my all-time favorite thing to create.
Secret Ingredient #1. COLOR is where I begin. For these tags I used Mexican blankets as my color inspiration.
Some friends and I are going to San Miguel for Dia de Muertos this year. My head is already filling with the vibrant colors of the holiday.
Secret Ingredient #2. BASE. Many of my tags are 3 x 6 ” (#8 size tag). I use a heavy cardstock at least #110 with two or three layers. (A traditional mini slimline card is 3 1/2 x 6″. This tag could fit on the front of a mini slimline card.)
It can be a little tricky to cut the diagonal corners so they match. Here is my trick. I cut one corner then use it as a pattern to cut the other.
An ombre background was created with Altenew Crisp Dye Inks from the Lapis Lazuli family using Altenew’s Large Blending Brush. I used the same colors to stamp the image and sentiment. Layered Snowflake Stars Cover Die A was die cut from Altenew’s Gilded Glitter Cardstock. Other colors of the glitter cardstock made bobbles for the tree.
Secret Ingredient #3 REINFORCEMENTS can be colored to match the tag.
Secret Ingredient #4. SHAPE. Tags don’t have to be rectangular. In fact, they are more interesting if the shape is varied
Mistletoe Wreath was stamped with clear embossing ink and heat-embossed in Enchanted Gold. Altenew Crisp Dye Inks were brushed on using the four-layer stencil. The wreath was then die cut three times. Enchanted Gold Metallic Thread was securely taped between the layers.
Secret Ingredient #5 INTERACTIVE. Who doesn’t love a shaker? This could be for a teen or for a guy. I’d bet the farm that even they can’t resist giving it a shake.
Secret Ingredient #6 LAYERS. The base of this card is simple ink blending using Altenew’s Big Blending Brush. Lots and lots of Layered Snowflakes and Layered Snowflakes 2 are die cut in white #110 cardstock and glued to the base. The snowflakes themselves are in layers of vellum, cardstock and glittered cardstock.
I cut a large tag to 3 1/4 x 8 1/4″. Then there is a choice of making a tag or putting the tag on the front of a slimline card which is traditionally 3 5/8 xc 8 5/8″.
Secret Ingredient #7 BLING. The snowflake tag above has a lot of glittered cardstock bling. This tag has even more bling! It is created with hot foil, glittered cardstock and gemstones.
Secret Ingredient #8 Texture. The Classic Pinecone Embossing Folder gives this tag texture.
I will be teaching this tag November 19th on Bridget Casey’s Free Saturday Workshop.
Secret Ingredient #9. Glitter and Foil. Yes! I tried it and it worked! Hot Foil on glitter cardstock. Peppermint tag from Rainbow Burst Hot Foil Plate.
Next on the list is Neha Aggarwal. I can’t wait to see what she’s made!
This blog hop has given me the opportunity to share my passion for tags. I put a tag tree up in my studio every year.
I hope to meet you in a class. I have a virtual class the second Wednesday of the month and teach about once a month on Bridget Casey’s Free Saturday Workshop. I teach in-person classes at Bluemoon Scrapbooking in Tucson, Arizona. All classes are announced in Altenew’s newsletter.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful projects! So many pretty things.
What a great idea to do tags instead of cards! My favorite is the Joy tag – so cute. And I love the tip to help cut the corners of the tag.
Handmade tags are not really my thing but I do like making paper tree ornaments and they are very similar!
Wow! Wow! Wow! I fell in love with the first tag done with the lapis lazuli color family…but the inspiration just kept coming. I definitely have to check out your classes and will be looking into Bridget’s classes as well. I am new to the Altenew line and am loving everything I am seeing…but my wishlist is growing exponentially 🙂
