Artistry Watercolor Tubes for Beginners

February 21, 2024

White I was intrigued with the beautiful new Artist Grade Watercolor Tubes from Artistry, I didn’t feel I had the experience or know-how to use them myself. After watching some of the release videos I decided there was no reason I couldn’t use them even though I wasn’t a watercolor artist.

A class taught by Edward Pilares, Painting 101 with Watercolor Tubes (Available on the Artistry Website), encouraged me to start using the watercolor tubes. With a few baby steps I can color to my own satisfaction with a goal of improving along the way.

These are the creamiest, dreamiest paints I have ever used! I hope I can convince you to open those cute little boxes and experience what’s it’s like to use these fabulous watercolors.

You deserve it!

Exercise #1 Color Swatch Chart

You will need

Whatever colors of watercolor tubes you have

A watercolor brush (I used Altenew #2)

A pallete

A2 watercolor cardstock

A cup of Water

Paper Towels

Mark off every 1/2″ across the cardtock so you have 9 long, narrow sections

In class we will brush from pure pigment to pigment mixed with water to determine the color range of each tube.

Exercise #2

This is just a playtime, learning to use the new watercolor tubes with a floral design.

Gracious Peonies is perfect because it’s big and the petal size allows some shading opportunities.

The example inside the tri-fold pamphlet that comes with this set had a gorgeous example which I selected to try for this exercise. It involves using all of the tubes in the set, a little color mixing and a chance to see how this product blends.

Supplies:

Gracious Peonies Stamp Set

Clear Embossing Ink

Silver Embossing Powder

A2 Watercolor Paper

Artists’ Watercolor Tubes

Small and Medium Brushes

Palette

Just a Number Die Set

Scrap of Sliver Glitter Cardstock

I’d love to see you in another class. I teach once a month on Bridget Casey’s Free Saturday Workshop and every 2nd Wednesday. I also teach in person at Bluemoon Scrapbooking in Tucson, Arizona.

  1. True water color artists could probably detect the differences better than I can. I do notice subtle differences which I’ll mention in class. This class can be applied to any water color medium.

  2. I am going to do this class today I think with my set of Altenew Goache paints as I thought I had the tubes already but don’t. I have never painted with Goache and hope it does well. I also have the Altenew 24 pan Artist colors so not sure which one I should use today?

  3. Thanks Pam I am excited to see you again.. I have had health challenges lately so unable to do much but am going to do class today with you!
