It’s time to think spring! My favorite spring flower has always been the lilac. Unfotunately they don’t grow here in Tucson. So I must grow paper lilacs. The is nothing that can replace the fragrance of a blooming lilac bush.

When I taught 5th grade in Indianapolis I mentioned to my class one spring how lucky they were to have lilacs growing in their yards. Next day they came into my classroom arms loaded with lilacs wrapped in newspaper. I hade lilacs in very available vase placed all over the classroom. It’s still one of my favorite teaching memories.

Supplies: As always feel free to use whatever supplies you have. Sample cards at the end of the post have other color selections.

Assembly:

For practice I will assemble a white lilac while the purple pieces dry. If you wish to assemble a white lilac along with me, die cut all of the pieces in white cardstock.

This will be done in class. But you might want to look it over or die cut ahead.

There are two die cutting plates with petals. Each plate will be die cut from two colors of purple. So you will have four different colors of petals. (You will have enough petals for two images).

Leaves will be die cut two times.

We will be numbering the stem and petals in class and laying them out in order.

Layout for leaves:

For this lilac I started with Blush and White Cardstock. It was ink blended with Bubblegum Dreams and Whispering Woodland ink families. The Doodle Lace Cover Die is cut in the Blush cardstock. Love sentiment is from Script Words Die and cut from glitter cardstock.

Shades of Lapis ink refills were dropped onto white cardstock that had been brushed with clear water. After drying completely the lilac was die cut from it. A similar process was used for the leaves with Emerald ink refills.

The background is Elegant Swirls Stenciled in white embossing paste.

The sentiment is from CYL Splendid Bouquet.

Erum Tasneem has a great tutorial using this technique. It can be found on Altenew’s Blog
