What is your definition of Clean and Simple? I believe it has a lot to do with Clean Lines and Simple Design; not necessarily a quick and easy card. In a Clean and Simple card the focus is on fewer design elements done really well.

Dynamic Blossoms has continued to sit on my desk because it’s a beautiful, unique design and I wanted to give it more attention. There are only two co-ordinating stencils so the coloring can be quite simple. One die cuts out the entire design which is a great time-saver.

Dynamic Blossoms is a long design that can be easily adapted to a slim-line format. This mat is 3 1/8 x 8 1/8″ and the card base is 3 1/2 x 8 1/2″.

I stamped the image in Memento ink twice and colored it using the stencils and small blending brushes in the Lapis Lazuli and Green Valley ink families. Extra layers of ink were applied at the base of leaves and flowers for more depth of color.

The background took some experimenting. First I tried stamping the image and coloring it more lightly with the stencils. Quickly it was clear that the die cut main image would blend too much into that type of background.

My blog reflects I’ve made many cards with a backgroundtechnique learned from Yana Smakula. An image is stamped all over the card front and colored. Then the “white space” is filled in with a dark color. Below is an example.

For this card, however, I changed the background to stamping and not coloring then filling in the “white space” with black alcohol marker. It’s a whole new idea for me,

I cut the Bold Greetings Hello out from the finished mat and saved the little pieces from the e and the o. The card was reassembled on a 3 1/8 x 8 1/8″ mat filling in the o and e. Hello was die cut 2 more times and stacked so it would be more prominent on the card.

The two colored and die cut images were then placed over the design and adhered with foam dots.

This technique works for any stamp that has an outline image. I hope it intrigues you as much as it intrigues me.

I would love to see you in a class sometime. I teach the 2nd Wednesday of each month, once a month on Bridget Casey’s Free Saturday Workshop and in person at Bluemoon Scrapbooking in Tucson, Arizona.

  1. Love your slimline card. Thanks for sharing your special techniques. I looked at the card carefully and could see what you had done. Thanks!

  2. Beautiful cards. When I create CAS I leave lots of white space because I always thouight that was CAS. Thanks for sharing another way to look at it….everyone’s interpretations are different and that’s what makes creating so great.
